Rooted in centuries of tradition, Bhaktapur Black Pottery is handcrafted by master artisans in the ancient city of Bhaktapur, Nepal. Each pot is shaped from the region’s rare black clay, known locally as ‘Dyo Cha’—the Clay of God—a material revered for its strength, beauty, and cultural significance.
The sacred clay can only be harvested by the Prajapati community of potters, custodians of this centuries-old craft. Digging for Dyo Cha is permitted only once a year, and requires descending 10 to 20 feet into the earth—a physically demanding and carefully preserved tradition passed down through generations.
After taking shape, each piece is painstakingly burnished and fired using an age-old smoke-firing technique that gives the pottery its distinctive deep charcoal-black finish. No paints or chemical glazes are used—its rich colour is created entirely through the firing process, making every vessel unique.
With their understated elegance and tactile beauty, these pots make striking additions to gardens, verandahs, courtyards, balconies, and interiors. Whether displayed individually or grouped together, they bring a sense of authenticity and timeless craftsmanship to every space.
